(Click on a band member's face on the right for personal info...) THE GRACKLESThe Grackles are a Chicago trio. But they don't sound like a "Chicago band." Maybe "early '90s indie rock" is a decent descriptor, but few bands from that era incorporated catchy melodies with subtly quirky time-changes and noise patches like the Grackles do. Maybe try mixing Drive Like Jehu, Elliott Smith and Husker Du and you'll be on the right track. It's like pop-influenced math-rock. Or maybe math-rock influenced pop music. This is fucking ridiculous. There are some mp3s on the website so figure it out yourself. At live performances, the songs are even more powerful and intense. Something gets broken or someone gets bloodied. Sometimes both. The band played their first show in April 2003. In summer 2004, Pirate Alley Records released the Grackles' first album, Honeypot. After a few short tours, including a triumphant show in New York during the CMJ conference, the band is preparing to head back into the studio with Mike Lust (Tight Phantomz, Ten Grand, Wilco) to record their follow-up album, intended for a late 2005 release. John H. plays guitar and sings. Brian plays bass. John F. plays the drums. And for the record, a grackle is a blackbird. They're known as nuisances in the southwest and northeast United States because they're so loud, they stick together in packs and they shit everywhere. Click here for a video of real grackles! |
